The Central Banks Have Been Busy:
In a recent report by the World Gold Council, we discovered that the amount of gold purchased by the central banks in the second quarter of 2012 was tremendously more than normal. How much did they buy? 157.5 metric tons! Not only is this a much larger purchase than normal, over 60% more than the first quarter of 2012, but it is the largest quarterly purchase gold for this sector since it became a net purchaser of precious metals back in 2009.
This should certainly raise your suspicions. If the World Gold Council only reported an increase of ten or fifteen percent from the previous quarter, then there would be minimal cause for concern. Let’s be real here. 157.5 metric tons of gold is an astonishing amount.
Following the Money with Soros and Paulson:
George Soros is known throughout the world for his wealth. When a hedge-fund managing billionaire like Soros makes a move on gold, it may be a good idea to pay attention. The second quarter of 2012 saw a major leap in the amount of SPDR Gold Trust shares held by Soros Fund Management. Their recent portfolio disclosure now shows holdings of 884,400 shares. This amount nearly triples their holdings as of last quarter.
Paulson & Co.’s holdings show a similar trend – massive gold-related purchases in the past financial quarter. Saying, “great mind think alike…” would be an understatement here. The fact that these major players are investing millions upon millions of dollars in gold related avenues means a major change could be on the horizon.
